Life-Saving Donations At Streatham Hill Vets

❤️  Did you know that dogs can give blood too? ❤️

That’s right; blood donation is not just for us humans. Your precious pets can donate their blood to help save lives! Isn’t that just incredible? 🐶 🐾

Here at Streatham Hill Vets, we often welcome brave visitors who have come to the surgery to donate blood. This is an incredible thing to do as it can really help other pets in need. It’s also completely safe for your dog, so you don’t need to worry. 😊

You might be surprised to hear that dogs that need blood transfusions don’t actually need to be of the same blood type the first time that they have one. This makes them rather unique and is why having a blood donor list is such a great way to find a volunteer quickly. 💌

If you think that your dog would be a willing volunteer, there are a few things you need to know first. Your dog’s welfare is always our number one priority, so in order to become a brave lifesaver; we must check a few things before they can make a donation. They must meet certain criteria, to ensure that they can safely donate.

Your dog must:
🔹 Be fit and healthy
🔹 Be between one and eight years old
🔹 Weigh more than 25kg
🔹 Have a good temperament
🔹 Have never travelled outside of the UK
🔹 Be vaccinated or have an annual titre test after the first year booster
🔹 Be up to date on preventative treatment including flea, worm & vaccines
🔹 Not be on any medication

We are always looking for new donors to join our blood donor list. This is really important for emergency situations as it really can save lives. 💕

So, what happens when your dog donates blood? First of all, a full blood profile panel is run- this is completely free. Your generous pooch will also receive fluids to replace the blood that has been taken. They will also get a box of delicious dog treats, a well-deserved rosette and countless cuddles from our friendly team, who just adore showering your pets with love. ❤️ 🌟

We’ve had lots of amazing volunteers at Streatham Hill Vets. Take a look at some of their incredible stories below…

Snoop The Superhero

Blood donation at Streatham Hill Vets

Meet Snoop! 🐶  This beautiful boy visited Streatham Hill Vets to donate his blood. 💙

We were so grateful for his visit, as he was able to really help one of our patients in need.

Sadly, one of our patients had an autoimmune disease that was causing their body to attack their red blood cells. 😢  They urgently needed a blood transfusion, which they received thanks to Snoop!

To collect the blood, our experienced nurses carefully placed a catheter into Snoop’s jugular vein. He had a light sedation, as he was so excited to see the team at the surgery.

Once the blood was collected, Snoop was spoiled with some tasty treats. He also got lots of cuddles and love from our team who wanted to congratulate him on being such a brave boy. 💙 ✨

Finn Saves The Day

Let us introduce you to Finn- the adorable Irish wolfhound! 😍

This handsome hound made a very generous blood donation at Streatham Hill Vets. He’s pictured here looking very proud of himself (as he should be!) with our lead Vet Gabriella. 🌟

Finn came in to make an emergency blood donation that was urgently needed for a beautiful girl named Izzie. 🐶

Izzie is the gorgeous four-legged friend that actually belongs to one of our lovely nurses, here at Streatham Hill Vets.

Sadly, Izzie was rushed into the surgery when her family noticed that she wasn’t herself. She was feeling very lethargic and didn’t want to stand up or walk.

An ultrasound at the surgery revealed that poor Izzie was bleeding into her abdomen. 😢

Thankfully, Finn’s owners rushed him in to make a life-saving blood donation. This brave boy donated 450ml of blood, which isn’t actually that much to a big Irish wolfhound like Finn. 🌟

Before going home for some rest, both dogs received lots of cuddles from our team! ❤️

A Very Brave Girl

This smiley lady is Ranza. How gorgeous is she? 🐶

Ranza’s lovely owners signed her up to our blood donor list. We were so thankful for this as we needed to call her in on short notice for an emergency. 💕

Ranza and her owners were more than happy to come and help us out. In fact, they were on their morning walk and took a detour to stop by Streatham Hill Vets. 🐶

We presented Ranza with a fancy rosette to say thank you for her kind donation. She was then sent home with a tub of treats and some farewell cuddles. Thank you Ranza, you’re a star! 🌟 ✨

We are always looking for brave blood donors. If you would like to add your four-legged friend onto our canine blood doner list, our team will be thrilled to offer advice and tell you everything you need to know.

Please give us a call on 020 8674 3525 for more information. Canine blood donations are always greatly appreciated not just by our team but by our lovely clients too. 💕 💖
